Schools are organizations with increasingly complex operations in part due to rising expectations and shifting paradigms. Essentially, education is a people business. This explains the fundamentally complex nature of school and schooling.All is not lost when the school is able to work from its strengths and appreciate the key leverages. In Kuo Chuan, we firmly believe that one of these key leverages has to be the huge positive energy and talent pool from our parents. Home-School Partnership has become a key component in the whole success equation for our children.If there is a term to succinctly capture the essence of Home-School Partnership, it could be the word “multiplier effect”. The multiplier effect on the child of a close Home-School Partnership is far reaching and long lasting as we work together to reinforce positive messages and efforts, debunk flawed perceptions and understanding, correct misbehaviour and reaffirm the growing teens. To fully realize the potential of a close Home-School Partnership, we need to harness the tremendous source of energy by building mutual trust and respect as we work hand in hand for all KCPians. The consistency of messaging is a subtle but nonetheless important process of reaching out to the growing teens. As a Kuo Chuan community, we can be reasonably proud that the Home-School Partnership has been an enduring one. Our parents are very supportive and understanding, diligently play their part for the good of their child, and often times, reach out to other KCPians along the way. The icing on this “multiplier” cake is our team of dedicated and faithful Parent Support Group members, who are definitely the key drivers in building a strong Home-School Partnership, and who go the extra mile to value add by sharing the burden of the school’s complex operations, providing the extra pairs of eyes and ears for school improvement, and journeying alongside the staff, providing the quiet but steadfast support as the going gets tough. To our Parent Support Group, the school has only gratitude and a sense of deep respect. Many a time, you have inspired us to go further with your sacrifices and efforts. We continued from a supportive, participative role in regular KCPSS events and rose to the challenge to hold PSG’s led special events.</TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT></TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT>KCPSS PSG participated in regular events such as Secondary 1 Orientation cum PSG members recruitment drive, KCPSS’ International Friendship day and Healthy Lifestyle week. The event went into the Singapore Records for a venue with the most number of badminton games played a within time span of 24 hours. Guest of honour was Li Li (above, second from right), who holds a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games in 2002.</TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT></TEXTFORMAT><TEXTFORMAT>The event made history by earning a place in the Singapore Book of Records (below, Principal Tony Low, middle, receiving the award) for the "Most number of matches in a single location". If a teenager is rejected by his peers, his self-esteem will be damaged and he will feel that the world is coming to an end. They are vulnerable to peer pressure and need appropriate guidance from the adults in their lives. In most cases, parents have to strike a balance between being a friend and at the same time, a disciplinarian when handling their teens.Companionship from peersTeenagers enjoy the company of their peers because they share common interests, feel comfortable exchanging ideas with their peers and are able to interact with their peers without feeling any constraints.Parents must face reality and accept the fact that with a wider circle of friends and a significant age gap, their teenage children may prefer the company of their peers. Some parents make it difficult for their teens to get along with them and confide in them because they like to preach, find fault with their children, boast about their children, or criticise their children in the presence of others.Understanding how/what your teens feelTeenagers feel they should have their own space and therefore, do not confide in their parents very much. They need others to treat them as adults. They dislike parents checking on them secretly as this makes them feel that they are not being trusted. If they find their parents snooping around, they will be more careful about their possessions and will deliberately conceal their whereabouts.If they feel that their parents do not trust and respect them, they will feel hurt and will in turn, not trust and respect their parents too. Parents need to understand their children’s psychology by putting themselves in their children’s shoes. Their guidance will then be successful. Guiding Principlesa) Respect your child’s friends. Never make statements like, ‘where did you meet people of such dubious character”.b) Teenagers value their friends very much. Any criticism directed at their friends is an insult to them. The best way is ask for their opinion regarding their friends. Most teenagers understand the behaviour of their friends.c) If children are not quite sure if their friends’ behaviour is right or wrong, parents may use a question as a form of communication. For instance, ask them, “what do you think about his drinking habit?” or “do you know why his relationship with his teacher is so bad?”.d) Encourage children to bring their friends home.
